Description

This is a model of the cartilaginous nasal septum developed by the department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at LOMA LINDA UNIVERSITY. Its shape was elucidated by dissecting 40 cadaveric septums and overlaying images of them to determine the average shape. Thickness at 24 predefined points was measured on all 40 septums, and then averaged for each point. The average thickness data was combined with the average shape to create the model. This model may be used for 3D printing, in any setting where an anatomically accurate model of the septum is needed. It may also be used for finite elemental analysis, which may help improve L-strut design in septoplasties. An expanded explanation of the development and uses of this model can be found in the following article: Han, P.S.; Punjabi, N.; Goese, M.; Inman, J.C. The Creation of an Average 3D Model of the Human Cartilaginous Nasal Septum and Its Biomimetic Applications. Biomimetics 2023
