Description

Examination of the retina during the COVID-19 pandemic presents a unique challenge. The nature of thorough retinal examination requires close patient contact and use of a head-mounted binocular indirect ophthalmoscope (BIO). Widely available personal protective face shields, while useful during slit lamp examination or minor procedures, are incompatible with the BIO. We have designed a 3D-printable clip that can be used to mount a simple face shield to the inner headband of a BIO. In addition to two 3D-printed clips, the user will need a simple, clear face shield as well as scissors to make two cross-shaped cuts near the upper corners of the face shield. Owing to its attachment to the BIO's inner headband, this face shield can also be used for slit lamp examinaiton and minor procedures (e.g., intravitreal injection) when used with a BIO with a light source that can be moved (e.g., Heine brand).
