Description
5-Methyltetrahydrofolate (https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/5-Methyltetrahydrofolate) is a methylated derivate of tetrahydrofolate (https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/tetrahydrofolate). It is generated by methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase from 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate (https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/5%2C10-methylenetetrahydrofolate) and used to recycle homocysteine (https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/homocysteine) back to methionine (https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/methionine) by 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/5-methyltetrahydrofolate)-homocysteine (https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/homocysteine) methyltransferases (also called methionine (https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/methionine) synthases).
