Description

Proof of concept(POC) model, not intended for printing but might work. The models have excessive geometry, so some files are too large to submit, other models are in three compressed files. This is the protein part of a two-part (http://3dprint.nih.gov/discover/3dpx-003610) zinc finger mold, where the DNA model binds into the Zn Model . This is a nested model design that was loosely based off, "A Soft and Transparent Handleable Protein Model (http://scitation.aip.org/content/aip/journal/rsi/83/8/10.1063/1.4739961)". This model is comprised of a six-part mold and an inner stiff cardinal backbone model that will be encased in transparent silicone (though acrylic and other clear resins may work). It comes with a funnel and built in pegs (with clearance) to align the inner model with the mold. Depending on the resin, you should be able to use any material for the inner model, including flexible filaments (see How To Print). For the mold, I recommend ABS. Performing an acetone treatment on the ABS mold will provide a smoother finish on silicone surface for improved visibility. Additionally, the abs may ease any clearance issues between the mold segments. Cast Volume≈ 290mL However, this method is unnecessarily difficult in both the making of the model and the casting process. I provide an alternate method in another model. It is still a work in progress, some if the finishing steps can be found here (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1WeWoH_malzd9xTyP_kPSC22iU-P6bfXIbhg3tGNufFU/edit?usp=sharing).
